Mid-Life Concerns

Do you feel that, even with the best of intentions, you have gotten lost somehow?

Do you feel confused or unhappy with where you are in life?

Are you questioning who you are, decisions you’ve made, or wondering where you go from here?

Are the things that used to make you happy, or helped you to cope, no longer working or working as well?

Jungian analyst, James Hollis, uses a dark wood as a metaphor for describing the experience some individuals have during a midlife crisis.

You find yourself lost in a dark wood.  You’re not quite sure how you got there, but there you are.  You don’t know how you will survive, how long you will be there, or the way out.

The purpose of therapy is to support you as you find your way through the dark wood.

Some examples of midlife crisis concerns are:

  • a loss of satisfaction with life's small pleasures.  Constant drive to do more and more that never quite fills you up.
  • a loss of interest in career path or a desire to change drastically parts of one's life.
  • loss of religious and spiritual connection.
  • shame and confusion around participation in an extramarital affair;
  • questioning whether to stay in a relationship that brings financial security yet lacks emotional connection;
  • questioning whether to stay in a career that brings prestige and wealth yet no personal fulfillment;
  • regret over missed opportunities or events in the past;
  • issues connected to past trauma or unresolved issues;
  • and struggling with health concerns or the normal aging process.
